Project Mercury was the name given to the first human space flight program in the United States. Missions in the Mercury project were the basis for the following Gemini and eventual Apollo Programs that brought man to the moon. Project Mercury had 20 unmanned missions and 6 manned missions, including Freedom 7 which made Alan Shepard the American in space, and Friendship 7, which made John Glenn the first American to reach Earth Orbit. The program lasted from 1958 to 1963.
